Artwork, Scanners, Saints Row the Third

saintsrow3artI broke in my new Moleskin with a piece of Saints Row 3 Art.  Ok, it really could be anything but it’s vaguely based on my SR3 character.  It’s been a while since I’ve just sat down and drawn something for the sake of drawing it.  I doodle all the time when I’m on the phone or whatever but I don’t just draw much anymore.

I’m actually pretty satisfied with it.  I need to get a better image of it though.  I tried something different, instead of scanning it, I just took a high res picture with my DSLR and cropped it down.  I then ran through the auto levels to fix the yellowish look it had and well, the result is the odd gradient you can see.

I wanted to put a car or something behind her but I didn’t feel like I had enough room to do it justice.  Such is the limit of a medium sized notebook I suppose.  Also, I suppose, the drawback of pushing to use more of the page.  i used to be terrible about using a small block in the center of the page instead of all of it.  I worked a bit to fix that habit.

Building a Better Dance Pad

So a while ago, I designed and built my own Dance Dance Revolution Dance Pad.  I’m not going to go too much into the details behind that, but for a variety of reasons, I’ve actually used it considerably less than I’d hoped.  I also found recently that the arrows don’t detect properly anymore since they are connected to the Directional Pad which reads as analogue not digital.

So, I fixed it.  While I was fixing it, I finally added the button box I’d been meaning to add.

The button presses of a Playstation Controller are simply the creation of an electrical contact.  This can be replicated on any similar button by soldering wires to either side of the PVC board’s pads inside the controller.

Anyway,  the first task was to rewire the pad’s “buttons” to the shoulder buttons of the controller board.  Simple enough.  Now they show up as “buttons” and not analog pulls in the PC.

Step two was to make the box removable from the pad for easy storage.  This also allowed me to replace the ball of wire that I’d ended up with when building it the first time.

IMGP5406 This mess becomes a network cable and a network jack.IMGP5405 The network cable is the one used for the new connections tot he shoulder buttons.

Next is the box, which I wired to the four face buttons of the controller.  It really doesn’t matter if I use the “start” and “select” buttons since in the end, the Playstation shell is tossed out and I simply map the buttons to whatever I want in game (I have yet to see how this will affect it if i use it on the Playstation).

The end result is much cleaner and much more reliable all around.  I will probably add some stickers or something to the box to make it look prettier.

Artist…

So my son has suddenly taken up an interest in learning to draw.  He’s been watching some Youtube videos and doing a pretty decent job of it.  This of course, has inspired me to dig out my old art work.

Holy shit there is a lot more than I remember.  I mean, it’s not a LOT, but, it’s quite a bit.  Not much recent though, the newest one was an effort to do an updated “Pokemon Team” of my group from Pokemon Diamond.  I finished Lucario and Weavile.  Here’s an old picture of my Pokemon Blue Team, the only other time I’ve done this. The Note at the bottom lists Lucario, Weavile, Alakazam, Scizor, Garchamp, Shedinja (with Scarf).

The Shedinja Scarf thing was kind of a joke, Shedinja is a special Pokemon that only ever has 1 HP, but he is immune to like 50% of attack types.  There is a scarf item you can find which protects against 1 hit kills.  In theory, ALL kills against Shedinja are one hit kills, so the scarf should make him invincible.  It does NOT work like this in game (stupid Nintendo).

Anyway, It makes me feel nostalgic a bit, which is good.  It’s also somewhat inspiring, which is also good.  I also, in hindsight, am not a bad artist.  I used to feel like I was pretty crap, and while none of it is stellar, there is a lot that’s pretty good.

I’m sure I’ll push forward an effort to scan and blog a lot of it.  More importantly, it’s inspiring me to actually use something I purchased recently, which was a Moleskin Notebook (Blank pages, not the Sketchbook variety).  A Moleskin is something I’ve wanted to buy for like, five years, or more, I just could never bring myself to spend almost twenty dollars on a notebook.  But they are supposed to be like the pinnacle of Notebook technology, so I bought one.

I have to admit, it’s very nice.

The Easy Part…

So the new house had a television wall mount already installed in the basement.  Also, someone was smart and made sure to install it into the studs.

My television has been sitting on it’s pedestal stand for too long. so I went and mounted it last night.

BTW, I totally love these little box-less wall plates.  They are much easier to get cables through.  I picked a double wide one because I knew I’d have a bunch of cables to cram through here.  Though in hindsight there weren’t THAT many cables and a single would have worked just fine.

I originally was just going to stick it inside the frame but the box wouldn’t fit.  Putting it below like this means it’s still hidden though so it’s not a huge deal.

I imagine that if the box were visible then the television would be small enough that the frame itself would end up being visible anyway.  Not to mention too small for the room.

So yeah, it’s hidden.  Also there was an existing box below that had a couple of phone lines and a couple of coax wires in it.  The previous owners had DirectTV so every cable jack has a phone jack with it (Direct TV Boxes require this).  I’m not sure why there were two here.  Our DSL based TV through the phone company works a bit different so one of the coax lines was used to feed the house and the other three cables were extras.

It also used a closed off sealed box.  Getting two HDMI cables and a VGA Cable and a hand full of composite cables through this box would be a pain so I opted to just put a flat plate over it and put in a new box.  To power the TV I simply dropped the power cable down through the holes and plugged it into the wall.

Selecting cables was a little tricky since I’m not real keen on running extra cables after the TV is up.  The TV has 4 HDMI inputs but at the moment I only need one for the Blu Ray player.  I have 4 cables but often to just drop two.  Sometimes i hook a laptop up to the TV with HDMI.  I also almost forgot to use the VGA cable.  Right now it does nothing but the office is behind this wall.  I plan to put in a VGA jack in the office so i can feed the TV with a PC (for Hulu or other video files, possibly even for Emulator gaming).

And so we have the semi final product.  No wires, nice and clean.  The console is temporary, which is “The hard part”, picking one out.  The wife said she has one picked out at K-Mart so that will look much better.  I also play to buy/build some narrower (probably 6” deep) shelving up both sides for books and movies.  Not too huge but something classy, and black.

The room also has a dimmer on the lights already, it’s a pretty kick butt movie room really, or at least it will be.

What a waste of good equipment. Just so the sales team can watch the occasional internet siminar or preview a few commercials.

This is our confrence room set up. Finishing the job was one of my initial tasks when I started working here roughly a year ago. All of the wires for the TV run down behind it through the wall and the equipment hooks into panels on the wall. There are 6 total speakers on the surround sound set up.

There is a DVD player, Receiver/Surround unit, Digital Receiver for HD reception, VCR, TIVO (that I havn’t got working yet), and a PC all hooked up to this system.

One of these days when I’m working the Sunday shift alone I want to play PS2 or Starcraft on this monitor.
