Rethinking my Commitment to the Sony Alpha

One day I plan to own a dSLR camera.  I actually really like my Kodak Z710, it’s a spectacularly good camera and I’ll continue to use it for years.  However I’d love to get the speed and control a dSLR provides.  I have several film SLRs but sadly I have become a digital whore over the years.  I love you film but… you’re just slow with results.

I’ve been long committed to purchasing a Sony Alpha 100.  The initial reason was “It’s compatible with my Minolta lenses”.  Further research added “It’s a pretty badass camera” to the list.

Recently the Pentax K10 has been brought to my attention.  Initiall impression from researching it’s abilities suggest it’s also pretty slick, though in different ways than the Alpha.   The Alpha seems to have more FPS shooting ability and it’s continuous indefinitely.  I often like taking photos through burst shots.  The Pentax has this really nice sealant system making it fairly weatherproof.  It won’t probably survive submersion but I could shoot shots in the rain or carry it around and in a waterfall.  The Pentax is also compatible with the K-mount lenses I already have for my film Ricoh (I’m 90% sure anyway).

On the other hand, my Minolta lenses are higher quality than my Ricoh ones.

Both are fairly comparible spec wise when it comes to Megapixels and quality. The alpha is suppose to have amazing in body stabilization but the Pentax is supposed to be even better.

Now I’m not sure which I want to eventually invest in.  I’ve been saving up bit by bit and hope to have the cash by the end of the year.  Complicating things even more is my desire for a dedicated video camera.  The Kodak DOES work nicely for photos but it’s video quality is only passably good.  Also I can’t zoom the Kodak while it’s filming.  It’s just not designed to be a video camera, it’s a still camera with video as a side feature.  A nice HD handy cam would be great for the kid’s programs and such.  Of course that would require I have an HD TV to view the video on.

Long Exposure

I’ve developed this “thing” for long exposure times recently. With a steady camera, you can achieve some spiffy effects. Especially at night.

Ok, almost exclusively at night since daylight would over expose the photo. Take the photos off to the right. the top one could have probably been a bit better. I was stopped by a train while leaving work one night. I set the camera on the dash, set it up for 8 seconds of exposure and took a picture of the train. See that blur across the middle. That’s train. It’s a ghost Train. You can see through it since there are gaps between the cars that exposed the shot.

The second one was a bit trickier and I may try to “reshoot it” someday with a tripod. I started taking this shot of the RPM needle in motion while I was actually moving the car but I had trouble keeping it steady. For this shot, I parked, put the car in neutral, then shot for 4 seconds as I revved up the engine.

The result is the needle being “in motion”. I took probably 20 crap shots that didn’t come out right before getting this one. It’s not quite apparent in this photo but the trick is to rev up quickly and hold the needle at the high point so it exposes slightly darker up at the “top”.

Then there are the photos above, taken a whole back on the Fourth of July. By using even a slightly long exposure time I could get some neat streaks as my kids waved their fire works. For some of the others I set the camera on the deck rail and set it for several seconds while they ran around. The result is a path of light that circles around the yard. for a few I carried the camera while using 8 second exposure. and followed them around. The sparkler light is bright enough that it still comes out crisp even as I carry the camera around.

Photos vs Pictures vs Snapshots

I take a lot of photos. LOTS. I love the fact that my Digital camera increments my photos by one each time I take one. On my old camera I took something like 3000 pictures over the two or three years I was using it. This is a bit approximate.

I’ve had my newer camera for 6 months. It’s much better quality than my old one and I’ve taken something like 5000 photos since I got it.

As I sort through all of these images I generally subconsciously sort of classify them into one of three main categories; Photographs, Pictures, Snapshots.

Here’s a short breakdown of what qualifies a photo for each of these classifications. Neither is necessarily a superior category to the other and each has their own advantages.

Photographs

We’ll start with Photos or Photographs. Generally speaking these are images that I feel are of a slightly higher caliber composition wise. They aren’t the ones that are the most crisp and clear necessarily, in fact many of them are deliberately not so. When I shoot film these days I generally go for the end result of a Photograph.

Some example photographs from my Flickr stream are below with an explanation as to why I call them Photographs.

This is a photo due to it’s stylized look. The stark brown tones contrast nicely with the blue sky. Everything skews off to the left side of the photo. The fact that part of the photo has been motion blurred by my driving at the time. These all are little quirks that make me classify this as a Photograph.I suppose I should mention that a Photograph’s purpose generally conveys some sort of emotion or thought. This particular photo would convey some sense of speed but also a but of depressing bleakness. At least that’s my opinion.
Here’s another good example of composition. I absolutely love this photograph. I generally don’t post images of family or people on Flickr but I make exceptions for shots like this. The purple flowers on the tree just seem to explode around my wife’s heat in this shot. It also contrasts very nicely with her dark shirt, white skin, and red hair making her stand out nicely. Also it’s one of the few times I actually managed to get her to give me a good photo. She hates having her picture taken
Here’s one that is nice due more to it’s composition than it’s colors. The perspective on this shot is really nice. The empty open road coupled with the obvious problem at hand really pushes to tell a story of lonely desperation and frustration. At least that’s my thoughts on the matter.Truth be told the road is pretty busy and I waited a good five minutes or so for the cars to clear out going both ways to make this shot.

One final note on Photographs, generally speaking anything “artsy” falls into this category, even if it’s accidental such as taking night photos with a non steady camera or taking shots of random poles or signs.

Pictures

Pictures make up the bulk of my photography. Generally I’d say the most common for most people would be Snapshots however. Pictures generally are staged out in some way and taken with a purpose of illustration. They aren’t really designed to convey a sense anything but serve to show something for what it is.

I use these a lot for reviews I wright over on Lameazoid.com. Most of those random Transformers pictures I have on my photo stream are classified as “Pictures”. Some examples below, though I don’t have much to say about any of them.

Snapshots

Snapshots are the most common type of image captures with a camera. By anyone. Not necessarily everyone but in an overall sense. These are your birthday shots, your zoo pictures, your trip to the beach. They are illustrative of the activity or even like a Photo but they convey some level of emotion, generally an upbeat one, like a Photograph. They are neither level of extreme however. It’s not really say that the Snapshot conveys the emotion of happiness, more that you see happy people at the birthday party and know it was a good time. It’s a documentation of an even or place that it’s quite as staged out as a Picture.

Example Snapshots

Bad Camera, Good Photo

I received my free Pop Tarts “Crazy Good” camera int he mail a couple of weeks ago. It included a 12 exposure roll of film which I finished up and shot off. All of the shots came out except for the one indoor shot of myself.

They also all had some rather interesting color and style going for them. Unfortunately I didn’t care for the final composition of all of them except this one. The colors and partial motion blur in this shot are both outstanding. I’m actually rather proud of this one, especially since it was taken with a pretty “lowest common denominator” camera. No flash, no zooming, no fancy focus, nothing.

Anyway the results were satisfying enough that I’ll be putting another roll in the camera.

By the way, when I mentioned it’s a free camera, Pop Tarts is giving the things away for three token proofs of purchase from specially marked boxes of Pop Tarts (they have camera offers all over the boxes). Well worth it if you like eating pop tarts. Not even a charge for shipping.

I’m Giving Up the Contest…

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I was determined to win the Allspark’s Photo Gallery Contest.

I’m giving it up. I’ve submitted my last entries this evening, G1 Snarl and G1 Optimus Prime. I’ve fallen behind the only other contender by about 10 galleries and after tonight I probably won’t have much chance to do any mass photo shoots.

And I don’t want to.

I used to have a thing I’d tell people about my writing hobby: “High School English class killed my love of writing.” That’s no joke. I used to love to write. I’d write original stories, I’d write “novel versions” of video games, I’d write random nothing and fake newsletters. I’ve gotten a lot of that back but for many years it was gone.

It’s only a month long contest but it’s starting to do the same for my desire to photograph or even look at Transformers. There’s nothing more crushing to creativity than 20 predetermined shots and angles plus trying to come up with 10 more. Also I have been less than perfect with lighting, which I inderstand wanting things to look nice but I can’t stand the whole “Pure white floating toy” image. There’s no depth or life to that.

On top of that every other aspect of my personal creative self has been suffering. I’ve done one review all month and that one was for Netjak (they havn’t posted it yet). I havn’treally taken any interesting photos all month, though I’ve got a good white background technique now and I’m getting a membership at the Decatur Scoville Zoo soon so I’ll get some decent opportunity. Also there’s that Anniversary trip to Chicago my wife and I are planning.

The point is, this marathon style of Photography just isn’t for me. I’ve allready got my hundred dollars set aside in Paypal for my Masterpiece Megatron, I’ll just continue with Plan A.
