Building a New PC

I am extremely familiar with the insides and mechanics behind build a PC from scratch.  I’ve put together several machines for both personal use and at (my old) work.  I also have done numerous upgrades to hard drives, RAM, GPUs, etc over the years.  I’ve wired up cases for better cooling and upgraded a PC so much that I rebuilt the original PC with all of it’s original parts.

I’ve never ever bought all the parts at once to put them together as a cohesive whole at the same time.

In the recent move, I’ve gained an office space.  Part of my desire for this office space is that it’s not going to be where the kids hang out to play on the computer.  Unfortunately, I can’t just stick them with one of my extra older PCs, it’ll never work out.  So I’m using the opportunity to build myself a new gaming rig.  Computer components have gotten so ridiculously confusing these days.  The last time I seriously build a PC it was simple.  If the processor speed was higher, it was better.  A 2 GHZ PC was pretty much always going to be better than a 1.8ghz PC.  Unless it’s a Celeron, then it just sucked no matter what.

Now it’s all Cores and i7s, and i3s and Phenom IIs and crazy numbers that are mostly just ePeen related.  Fortunately I am aware than GPU means more to a PC than CPU.  That’s why I started with GPU.  My old machine actually performs much better than I would ever expect considering it’s only Dual core and it’s a stock Dell machine with a new GPU and some RAM.  The key was, I picked out a good GPU when I bought it.

So I did some research on benchmarks and performance and came up with a Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6850.  It’s not a top of the line card but it ranks very highly and costs about half as much as the cards ranking similarly.  I’m still being budget conscious with my choices and trying to get the best value I can.

I then did move on to processor.  As I said, modern processors confuse me, so I started off looking into the AMD chip recommended by Amazon to go with the GPU.  It was a place to start more than anything.  I’ve had a lot of AMD CPUs and always liked them.  They used to be the top dog but I was pretty sure Intel had come back to the lead.

Some Google searching suggested that it’s not real great unless it’s overclocked and I’m not really interested in trying to overclock anything.  It’s not that I don’t think I could do it, it’s more than I don’t want to have to buy another $150 processor when I fuck it up.  One thread I found on this chip had several recommendations for the Intel i5 2500 3.3Ghz.  It’s a Quad Core chip.   I did a bit more research and decided to go for this chip.  Mostly my research was into i5 vs i7, but this i5 is supposed to be pretty decent.  Besides, CPU is less important and I’m going to better value with a good punch.

On a side note, I also am hazy on the details but I also know that more cores doesn’t always mean better.  4 cores doesn’t make this a 12 Ghz processor, not every application uses multiple cores.  However I do a fair amount of Photo editing with Photoshop and I do a fair amount of editing with Adobe Premier, BOTH programs I know benefit from using multiple cores.

At this point I threw on a compatible fan nothing fancy, it was cheap and ranked 1st in fans on Amazon so I bought it.  I also threw on a 500W power supply to run it all.  I have a 500W power supply but it’s got some bad bearings in the fans and runs loud.  I could probably fix it but electricity scares me and I am pretty sure power supplies can be dangerous even when un plugged.

all that was left was to tie it together with a motherboard.  I picked up one from the list of recommended ones, it’s listed as Gigabyte Intel Z68 ATX DDR3 2133 LGA 1155 Motherboard GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 and is very Blue.

So, because it coordinates, I picked up 8 GB of Blue RAM with flashy cooling fins to go in it.

I didn’t need to get a case, I have a very large and nice case I bought last time I built a machine.  it is absolutely boring as hell in it’s designs but that was what I wanted, something that “wasn’t curvy and swoopy and neon and looked like a Riced up Honda PC”.

I’m not showing this thing off for looks.

I also already have some hard drives.  I have a 1 TB that I’ll probably stick in it out of my current machine.  It keeps disappearing from the OS, but I am 90% sure it’s because that stock Dell Power supply sucks and can’t handle running 3 hard drives and a GPU.

I also don’t need a Monitor.  I ordered a decently large LCD a week ago when I thought I was going to be running a different older machine in the office.

Anyway, I’m pretty stoked.  I also went in for the Amazon Prime trial so everything should be here by Thursday.

The Easy Part…

So the new house had a television wall mount already installed in the basement.  Also, someone was smart and made sure to install it into the studs.

My television has been sitting on it’s pedestal stand for too long. so I went and mounted it last night.

BTW, I totally love these little box-less wall plates.  They are much easier to get cables through.  I picked a double wide one because I knew I’d have a bunch of cables to cram through here.  Though in hindsight there weren’t THAT many cables and a single would have worked just fine.

I originally was just going to stick it inside the frame but the box wouldn’t fit.  Putting it below like this means it’s still hidden though so it’s not a huge deal.

I imagine that if the box were visible then the television would be small enough that the frame itself would end up being visible anyway.  Not to mention too small for the room.

So yeah, it’s hidden.  Also there was an existing box below that had a couple of phone lines and a couple of coax wires in it.  The previous owners had DirectTV so every cable jack has a phone jack with it (Direct TV Boxes require this).  I’m not sure why there were two here.  Our DSL based TV through the phone company works a bit different so one of the coax lines was used to feed the house and the other three cables were extras.

It also used a closed off sealed box.  Getting two HDMI cables and a VGA Cable and a hand full of composite cables through this box would be a pain so I opted to just put a flat plate over it and put in a new box.  To power the TV I simply dropped the power cable down through the holes and plugged it into the wall.

Selecting cables was a little tricky since I’m not real keen on running extra cables after the TV is up.  The TV has 4 HDMI inputs but at the moment I only need one for the Blu Ray player.  I have 4 cables but often to just drop two.  Sometimes i hook a laptop up to the TV with HDMI.  I also almost forgot to use the VGA cable.  Right now it does nothing but the office is behind this wall.  I plan to put in a VGA jack in the office so i can feed the TV with a PC (for Hulu or other video files, possibly even for Emulator gaming).

And so we have the semi final product.  No wires, nice and clean.  The console is temporary, which is “The hard part”, picking one out.  The wife said she has one picked out at K-Mart so that will look much better.  I also play to buy/build some narrower (probably 6” deep) shelving up both sides for books and movies.  Not too huge but something classy, and black.

The room also has a dimmer on the lights already, it’s a pretty kick butt movie room really, or at least it will be.

I am… a Gleek

In which I write about a television series on a writing blog.  However I am trying to keep this series of I am… Essays on this blog so here you have it.

GleeksSeveral years ago, when Glee came out, I was pretty skeptical.  It seems to be a little out there and odd and kind of dorky.  I mean it’s basically a musical TV series.  Sort of like American Idol with a plot.

I passed on it.  it was “lame”.

The problem is, I like music.  I also have a weakness for cover songs.  I have a weakness for cover songs that change the style of the music.  Most importantly.  I like things that are lame.

Suddenly, one day, Glee showed up on Netflix.  Season One anyway.  So hey, this is popular, let’s see what’s what with Glee.  And I was hooked.  The whole series was basically a series of cover songs of older music with a lose plot used to tie the songs together by lyrical themes.  The cast is actually full of fairly annoying and unlikable characters but at the same time, I can’t help but hang on to their every plight.

What really helps the series is that the cast members can actually sing music.  Hell part of the reason the entire cast is basically a bunch of nobodies is that they went out and found people off Broadway or wherever who could actually perform.

After the first season climaxed at the Sectionals competition, cleverly throwing back to the Journey song that brought the group together, Don’t Stop Believin’, I wanted more.  I didn’t want it to stop.  Sadly, Netflix had no Season 2.  Occasionally I scooped up shows through Amazon when they would have promos for free video credit but I only managed to get a third of the way through.

Fortunately, Netflix caught up and Season 2 arrived.  The series started taking new turns.  The music became more up to date, which actually kind of hurts the series’ charm.  The A Cappella group the Warblers was introduced and got many opportunities to show off throughout the season.  More interestingly, several characters who in Season One were essentially furniture started to get pushed up into the spotlight.  The core cast grew naturally as the original stars had been somewhat exhausted.  The originals didn’t fall away at all, they just got a bit less screen time.

On a side note, the one character I’d like to know more about who has literally been referred to as furniture on the show has still never got anything, which is the ever present pianist.  Who the hell is that guy anyway and why is he always hanging around?

Anyway, Season 2 got grander with it’s competitions and drama.  It also made several interesting choices which really stood out during the competitions.  During the Sectionals performance, the standard duo of Rachel and Finn are pushed aside for Quinn and Sam, but the camera work and staging is paralleled to the previous Sectionals of Rachel and Finn.  (On a side note, I really wish Rachel had done this song because she would have kicked ass at it).

Even more clever was the Nationals duet finale with Rachel  and Finn which does directly parallel the previous season finale except for the crucial difference that instead of accepting their love for each other there is a bit of animosity and even hatred at work.

Speaking of Rachel.  Never have i been so torn on a character.  Rachel Berry is the extremely self centered star performer of the group.  She thinks she is “all the shit” when it comes to the club, which isn’t helped by the fact that she is right.  This makes her extremely unlikable.  On the other hand, she is so legitimately ridiculously talented that I could listen to her sing all day.  It almost makes me want to cry at some points.  Not every song is a winner but there are a lot of really brilliant songs done by Rachel.

Which brings up my last little point I’d like to touch on.  There is this impending dilemma for the end of Season Three.  The creators have decided that it doesn’t work to keep the characters perpetually in High School.  The actors age out.  They also may want to explore other roles (or even singing careers).  It also gives the excuse for the writers to dump characters when their pay grade starts to spike.  This creates “The Graduation Delima”.  Officially, only Kurt, Finn and Rachel are leaving (supposedly/apparently).  In watching Season Three, it feels like almost all of the main cast is in their Senior Year.  Once they graduate, what happens?

They could continue with the show, get some new “kids” and keep going.  The problem I see here is that so far, despite getting more characterization, Kurt, Finn and Rachel are the most important characters in the series.  Quinn and Santana are ok, but a lot of the others are are pretty one dimensional despite.

There also could be an entirely different possibility of following the cast as they move on.  There is a lot of push that could land a lot of the main characters in New York.  Even if they rebrand the show ‘”Broadway” and move on, that could almost work.

Probably the best option, frankly, is to just end it.

Yeah, I like the show.  I like it a lot.  I watch repeats of the songs on Youtube and have a dozen or so MP3s of the tracks, but it may be time to just end it.  I have gotten irritated at series endings in the past but I have seen many others just linger for way too long.

The best example I can think of is House, which should have also ended at Season 3.  House fires his staff and ends up alone like he wants.  No lame reality show style contest, no dumb prison junk or House goes crazy crazy, just an end.  I used to really like House but the plots got so drama filled and outlandish and there are so many times House can misdiagnose things until he gets an epiphany before it gets old.

So my vote, despite my Gleekdom, is for Glee to end.  Push them to a win at Nationals, give us the series climax we all want, and let ti quietly ride off on a huge bang.

The New House!

Yesterday we closed on our new house.  Still in Pana, but closer to the school and larger to accommodate our fiver person family (plus sister in law who is living with us at the moment).

My favorite part is the office space I’ll get to make use of.  Yeah, I have to share some with Tina’s crafting stuff but it is large enough for both of us to use.

Also the downstairs family room is pretty spiffy.  This room will probably house some of my toy junk as well as the television and main computer.

I am Reaching a Precipice…

I am on the edge again.  I’ve been here before, I’ve been to the other side, but this time, somehow it’s different…

I am really close.  Each time I get closer, more attuned, better acquainted.

Just what am i on the edge of?  Why, converting to Linux!  I have tried and failed repeatedly.  I have made some adjustments over time to help push this next go at it even farther.  For example, one of my main irritations is the lack of games in Linux.  Mac seems to be sort of catching up but Linux is still pretty far behind.  However I have gotten increasingly good at wrangling VMs and WINE to my will.  That and Desura has a Linux client now, and thanks to numerous Indie games bundles, I have a pretty substantial Desura Library going.

My other complaint is that Windows Live Writer does not run in Linux.  It still does not.  Which is sad and irritating and may, once again, be a deal breaker.  as stupid as it sounds, this program, which isn’t much more than a word processor, is a fantastic piece of work.  Mostly it takes the hassle out of the publishing portion.  I don’t have to upload images, I don’t have to finagle with Wodress’s slightly clunky dashboard.  I just set it in this program and hit “Publish”.  I tried doing everything in Google docs but that is such a crappy broken experience, especially the spreadsheets.  It’s not really blogging related but NOTHING beats Excel.  Open Office Calc, or whatever they are calling it these days is crappy as hell too.

I also have been using my dual boot on my laptop a bit more.  Unfortunately, once again, it’s a bit of a deal breaker because the touchpad emulation/drivers/whatever sucks and there is NO way to disable the useless “Gestures”.  Which means as I type, every time my wrists or thumbs brush the touch pad my cursor goes flying and things start scrolling undesirably.

After the move I DO plan to set up “my machine” in the office with Ubuntu.  Even it 90% of the time it runs a VM of Windows over top, it’ll be Ubuntu underneith,  I’ve also been looking into creating VMs from existing installs.  I have my Minecraft server that I’d like to push into a VM on the same machine.  Mostly because it also serves the function of being an OpenSIM server and a Radio Stream server at time.  Both of these are a pain in the ass to reconfigure and set up, especially the Radio server since I’ve done some clever hacks to do some clever things.  OpenSIM will work natively on Linux and I want to eventually convert, I imagine Minecraft will too and it’s worlds are easy to move around, but Radio DJ is Windows only.

Anyway, I feel like this could be “the time”, but I’ll probably just come crawling back to good old Windows.  The reality is, there is no need to switch, I can easy run and use both, which is really the better solution.
